Saltbox Seafood Joint – Catfish Sandwich

Saltbox Catfish TitleCatfish NoLogo-3Overlooking the Little Five points area of Durham there is a little shack that looks like it should be sitting about 3 hours east along the waters of the Carolina Coast called Saltbox Seafood Joint. Thats the look and feel Chef Ricky Moore was going for when he converted a former hotdog stand into a classic American fish house.

The menu consists of whatever his fishmongers ferry up Interestate 40 that morning. On opening everyday, the menu is handwritten on the chalkboard. Fried sandwiches or plates featuring the days catch, soft crabs (when in season) VooDoo Shrimp Boil brothy fish soup with celery, tomato and bay leaf fried fish baskets and plates.

Just a few minutes talking with Ricky you can sense his passion and with one bite you can taste it. Regardless of what kind of fish you like don’t forget to get a side of  fried cornmeal dumplings glazed with spiced local honey called hush honey’s. I would also suggest getting their early because Ricky regularly sells out.
