A couple weeks ago we finally made it to NanaTaco in Durham for lunch. After tasting their tostadas at the Seed’s Harvest Dinner I knew it was a priority to get involved. Walking into Nanataco you can immediately tell it’s not your standard neighborhood taqueria, after looking at the menu it becomes even more obvious. Nana’s touts some unconventional proteins that can be stuffed inside your classic taco, burrito or tossed on top of a salad. I can’t say I have ever been in a place that offered braised local hog jawls, lamb cheeks, house smoked duck and crispy pork belly on tacos.
What We Ate:
House Margarita ($5.00) – No margarita mix here, and I dig a margarita that you don’t have to question if it has any tequila in it.
Chips and Salsa ($2.00) – nice warm crispy chips. very good salsa and selection of add-ons at the toppings bar
Three Tacos ($6.00) – Ok so i chickened out and wasn’t feeling adventurous enough to venture outside the box and kept it basic but the flavor in these meats made these tacos taste far from basic, Chili Rubbed Pork Butt, Garlic Slow Cooked Beef and House Rotisserie Chicken. All three tacos were outstanding, tender and laced with flavor.
Big Daddy Burrito ($7.95) – This burrito was ordered with beef and while it tasted good it’s not something I would get here again. The meat was delicious but it just had so much else going on inside that I would go a couple bites without laying my chompers on any of that great beef
When Nanatacos first arrived last year many wondered how it would fair against Chubby’s Tacos. The wife is a big Chubby’s fan and seemed to jump of the Chubby bandwagon at first bite. NanaTaco is a great spot and they let their creativity show and maybe next time I will leave my taco comfort zone for one of the “dirty meats”
love nana’s
