Hickory Hollow Inn – Old Texas Style Grub

Houston, Texas

What I ate:

2 Meat Combination Plate ($9.99) – Choice of any two meats, sliced beef, smoked sausage, chopped beef, pork ribs, grilled chicken breast, bbq chicken, fried chicken breast, chicken fried steak.

I chose the chopped beef and chicken fried steak. The chopped beef was a brisket that was chopped and topped with some bbq sauce. The brisket tasted great and was very tender. The chicken fried steak was was billed as the “best chicken fried steak in houston” by the Houston Press. One of two things has happened, someone had an off night on the fryer or Houston needs to step their chicken fried steak game up.

For my choice of side items were the southern green beans and fries. I don’t normally have great things to say about green beans but these were awesome. They had little bits of pork and that is a surefire way to make vegetables worth eating.

Victoria Beer ($3.03) – I had never heard of this beer that was first brewed in Mexico 1865. This smooth Vienna-style beer has been recently released in the US and I hope it makes it way north of Texas.

While I was a little disappointed with the chicken fried steak, I thought this place was very good. For $13.00 I got good meal that was more than enough food and a good beer. The old Texas style layout with pictures of John Wayne holding heat added to the atmosphere along with dark wood interior and picnic benches.
